Mango Lassi

Lassi is a yogurt based Indian drink. or smoothie, served either   savory or sweet, flavoured with spices, herbs Or fruits and nuts.

Where mangoes are the most favourite summer fruit, and naturally high on sugar, Mango lassi is an all time favourite at home. Adding sabza or the sweet basil seeds, make it a great body cleansing drink. Sabza, as is commonly known in India, help to keep the body cool. In summers due to frequent dehydration, Constipation is a common problem, and thus sabza helps in cleansing, due to it gelatinous nature, it helps in regulating bowel movements. Sweet basil seeds are also good for weight loss, but I am afraid here as we use them in addition to mangoes, it is just gives a texture to the drink, and the benefits come along in many other ways. I love the volume that soaked sabza adds to any drink. In fact MAngo lassi with sabza is like a yogurt smoothie, in a desi way

On days when I feel lazy to put many things on the breakfast table, A glass of Mango LAssi topped with Sabza seeds, make a perfect breakfast in a glass. I like to even make it rich with a handful of dry fruits for my kids as, it adds to the nutritional value of the drink. Though kids like more of mango added to a milk shake, I enjoy it As mango lassi as the little sourness of yogurt is very well balanced by the sweet mangoes, and curd is easy on tummy also, in the kind of heat Delhi experiences.

Though it is a smoothie where mangoes are churned with the yogurt, I like a few pieces in my lassi and love to chew them while sipping the drink.

As a kid mom used to make lassi with mangoes, but never really used sabza. Sabza is actually an exotic gourmet add-on, and we as kids only saw it served with falooda served at a shop or in weddings.  actually as I child never really appreciated the flavour of Sabza.

I started liking the use of sabza in desserts and drinks after I got to taste it a few times recently and loved the gelatinous crunchy little pearly look they add to the dish or the drink.

Next time you plan to make a dessert do grab some basil seeds, soak them for an hour and add or garnish it With Basil seeds, I am sure You will include them in your grocery list more often.
